Overview
Continuing Rapido’s tradition of highlydetailed passenger cars, Rapido isproud to introduce the all-new BuddSlumbercoach in HO scale!
In the mid 1950s, with passengersquickly switching to airline travelor the private automobile, the Buddcompany devised the Slumbercoach asan economical way to attract overnightpassengers back to the rails. Witha capacity of 40 passengers in a 24single room plus 8 double room plan,the Slumbercoaches offered a lowercost alternative positioned betweencoach seating and a first class bedroomon overnight runs. A single aisle in thecenter of the car was flanked by thesingle and double rooms on each side.
With 18 cars built new between1956 and 1959, these cars with theirdistinctive staggered windows could beseen on some of the USAs most famoustrains such as the North Coast Limited,Denver Zephyr, National Limited, TexasEagle and many more.
As delivered, the 18 car Slumbercoachfleet comprised of the following:
- Baltimore & Ohio, 5 cars
- Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy, 4 cars
- Missouri Pacific, 1 car
- New York Central, 4 cars
- Northern Pacific, 4 cars
Later, in 1964 the NP would takeownership of the B&O and MP carsand at least 2 cars ended up with BNlettering briefly in 1970-71. The entirefleet would end up with Amtrak in the70s and 80s with all cars converted tohead end power. Most lasted into themid to late 90s when they were finallyretired and replaced with more modernequipment such as the Superliner IIand Viewliners. Most of the fleet stillexists today in various states includingin museum collections and in privateownership. One car – Loch Ness – hasbeen fully restored by Webb Rail and isoperated as a private car.
All-new from the ground up, theRapido Slumbercoach features:

- Full Rapido level of underbody detail including separate pipes and conduits

- Constant track-powered interior lighting (DC and DCC)
- Accurate GSC 41-NDO-11 trucks with disc brake detail
- Etched-metal end gates and sprung diaphragms
- Rapido’s renowned stainless-steel finish
- Separately applied name boards
- Multiple paint schemes as well as a generic painted model ready for custom liveries.
